Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: Tina Fey, Girl Reporter
Our hearts did not collectively shatter when Tina Fey turned down the opportunity for a sequel, because let's be honest, has there ever been a sequel to a fantastic movie that wasn't a total letdown?
I always suspected those two were separated at birth... Fey's performance yo-yos so much that the audience feels a little motion sick by the ending.
CONSIDERING my longstanding affection for Tina Fey and the fact that I am a lady journalist who once dreamed of being a foreign correspondent, it would be deeply silly to pretend to be the stony-browed face of impartial judgment when it comes to Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, starring Fey (she also produced!) as a war correspondent in Afghanistan. There, in the midst of chaos, she finds the strength she never knew she had. Barker gets royally reamed out by a hard-ass general (Billy Bob Thornton, chewing every insult like a fine cigar).
Whiskey Foxtrot Tango plays like Animal House with warlords, or maybe Fear and Loathing in Afghanistan, but Barker describes the reality of her time there in more poetic terms. "And it was important to find a genuine friendship between Tina's character and my character". "I got to fly in a helicopter, a Huey, with no doors on the side and it was really cool and exciting", Fey says.
"First of all, I was impressed with how bold she is and what a great talker and overall conversationist she is". It's a lot to try and bite off, and [it's] stuff that we should take seriously. In the film, Fey stars as journalist Kim Baker, a woman who worked in Afghanistan as a war correspondent.
While taking part in a New York Times panel in New York on March 2, Fey said that she, composer Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin "have been working on it", reports The Huffington Post.
"I felt like dark comedy and absurd humor was the only way I could put any sort of frame on the things I had seen over there", Barker told MPR News reporter Euan Kerr.
Without question, Tina Fey is an A-list comedy actress, but I'm not sure how many people realize how good she is at more serious fare. "Kabul Cute" is a real saying; "Mission Pretty"; "Desert Princess" is another one that a female helicopter pilot told me. And to do that sex scene with Martin [Freeman], which I could watch forever, was a new place for her. As long as it's necessary, as long as it pushes the story forward, I'm gonna go for nudity for the next thing I write for her. She's gotten opportunities before, but Fey really gets a chance to shine in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which is hitting theaters this week. A real highlight is the touching friendship between the reporter and her smart and very observant Afghan translator. According to Fey (who serves as a producer on the film), she did see a controversy brewing and tried to warn directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.
