Hillary cruises to big win over Sanders in key state primary

Bernie Sanders keeps eyes on prize of White House

“I'm not a Superpredator, Hillary!”: Black Lives Matter protestors confront Clinton at South Carolina fundraiser

But the senator from Vermont, a state where about 1 percent of the population is black, lacks Clinton's deep ties to the African-American community.

Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are in a pitched battle for the Democratic nomination but where do they stand on the issues, and where do they differ from their presidential predecessors?

The Sanders campaign knew it was going to lose SC.

"We are going to compete for every vote in every state, we are not taking anything or anyone for granted", Clinton said. In South Carolina, despite a heavy loss, Sanders received 63 percent of the young vote in the state.

He said Sanders' momentum in SC "fell off the table" after Clinton's solid victory in Nevada on February 20.

Clinton made a stop in Alabama, a Super Tuesday state, yesterday before returning to Columbia, South Carolina's capital, for an evening victory party. Though she never mentioned GOP front runner Donald Trump's name, the comments referenced his campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again".

Meanwhile, in Georgia, the second biggest state on Super Tuesday, Clinton has a 28 percent lead on Sanders with 57 percent to 29 percent. "Sanders on running a great race", Clinton said to her supporters. He also carried those who identified themselves as independents.

The results from SC are already coming in, and it is no surprise Democratic candidate for president Hillary Clinton won.

A self-described democratic socialist, Sanders has energized his supporters with impassioned calls for breaking up Wall Street banks and making tuition free at public colleges and universities.

In a victory rally Ms Clinton saved her fire for Republican billionaire Donald Trump - and even took on a hint of Mr Sanders' anti-establishment firepower.

"I congratulate Secretary Clinton on her very strong victory".

Clinton even did better with African-American voters in the state than Barack Obama did in 2008.

The primary reflected a strength among black voters, who make up more than half of the party's primary electorate in SC.

Sanders says he expects to do well in Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Massachusetts and his home state of Vermont.

"He's got to pull off a surprise against Clinton soon or he won't have time to recover", said Phil Noble, a longtime Democratic activist in SC.

Bernie Sanders tried to find some good news in his crushing defeat in the SC primary when he appeared on the Sunday political talk shows from his hotel room here.

Clinton left for Tennessee shortly after claiming victory in SC and in the coming days she will visit Arkansas, Virginia and MA, among other states, in an effort to solidify her support.

Clinton and Sanders will both hold rallies in Boston tomorrow, the day before Super Tuesday, when MA will be one of 11 states holding Democratic primaries.
