"It's now official that I've kissed more men on camera than in real life".
The script was written by longtime SNL and "30 Rock" veteran Robert Carlock, who effectively weaves between the extreme experiences that Fey's character faces, which radically change her outlook on a variety of things.
In the meantime, you can check out Fey in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot this weekend.
Speaking on the red carpet, Margot Robbie, who plays a TV journalist that Fey's character befriends, says working on the film was smooth sailing.
Directed in a scattershot style by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and co-produced by Lorne Michaels, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" treats the Afghanistan War with a level of sensitivity but offers no new insights. "In 2015, in the pool of actors in New York City that [casting director] Bernie Telsey very, very diligently searched through, these were the best people for the role", Fey continued.
Kim's life is now full of interesting people, and she begins to question why she plans to go back home to NY at all. WTF is, as it opens, an exciting tale and we see Kim go from having a safe desk job and safe boyfriend (Josh Charles), to a stint reporting from Afghanistan. I can't say I would have had a different impulse - true of most of us, which turns out to be something of the film's actual point, oddly enough - but those low stakes seriously dampen its fire. Her first time partying out in Kabul with her newfound friends is fascinating.
When she got there, she enjoyed the adrenaline-pumped life so much that she stayed on for three years in the area. There, amidst a mind-boggling array of adventurers, militants, warlords and madcap chaos, Kim finds something unexpected: the strength she never knew she had.
The film is based on the book, "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan" by newspaper reporter Kim Barker who was based in those countries as a correspondent. "That's the most American-white-lady story I've ever heard", one character tells her, and it's hard not to agree. "who's going to get in trouble for this is me". The balancing act between family and work is a fine story, but it's to "Whiskey's" credit that it's not the story Baker is after. It's a tough call because the film doesn't know the answer either. But this "isn't a great movie" and "lacks the emotional heft Fey can bring to a role". "Do you really like this guy?" she recalled saying, "because the only person - the only person!"
For all those shortcomings, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot manages to be more good than bad. Kim is bumped from copy editing to war correspondent.
If film-goers find themselves watching and wondering, "Did that actually happen?", Barker said: Yes, mostly.
There's no denying Tina Fey is one of the premiere voices in comedy today.
Stern wanted to know Fey's opinion about the tv movie and asked, "It was frightful, right?" So are Robbie, Freeman and Billy Bob.
