No much is known yet about the plot of the new movie, which is still in pre-production, but the mythical Egyptian beast has been laying dormant since 2008, when the fourth film in the Brendan Fraser franchise was released. The film was already slated to release in 2017, so the delay from March to June is likely to accommodate Tom Cruise's schedule.
After months of speculation and rumors, it's official: Universal is indeed rebooting The Mummy as part of their attempt to turn their classic movie monsters - including Frankenstein, Dracula, and more - into a giant interconnected universe a la Marvel.
Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella has also been casted for The Mummy reboot.
The studio tapped Kurtzman and Chris Morgan last summer to help develop a universe for Universal in which its classic monster movie library is front and center.
Characters from the monster universe films are expected to crop up in each other's installments before culminating in an Avengers-style tie-in film. This upcoming adventure will now go up against Paramount's World War Z 2 and Lionsgate's The Divergent Series: Ascendant, while it would have only faced Lionsgate's Power Rangers in its old March 24, 2017 date.
Expect production to begin later this year, possibly once Cruise is done filming Mission: Impossible 6.
