Chip Kelly Named New SF 49ers Coach

Reports have surfaced that San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York and general manager Trent Baalke are hesitant to allow Colin Kaepernick to walk away from their team this soon. I think I see it working with 49ers.

"Chip has a proven track record at both the college and National Football League levels that speaks for itself", York said. "I look forward to watching (GM) Trent (Baalke) and Chip work closely to build a team that will make us all proud".

Kelly was sacked by Philadelphia after Week 16 with one game remaining in his third season as coach. More likely, Kelly will set it back or end it entirely.

Kelly had mixed success when he was with the Eagles, and the Chronicle informs us that he has a 26-21 record and failed to make the playoffs in his two previous seasons. Well, we learned this morning that the organization has made a decision: Chip Kelly, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, is the team's new coach.

Kelly's downfall was his insistence on personnel control, as a series of questionable moves-including cutting dynamic playmakers WR DeSean Jackson and RB LeSean McCoy- led to a depletion of talent and strained relationships in Philadelphia.

Kelly has not worked alongside Baalke, but 49ers senior personnel executive Tom Gamble did work in the Eagles' front office from 2013 to 2014.

According to Ian Rapoport, Kelly liked the idea of coaching Kaepernick so much that acquiring him became part of the process in determining where he would coach next.

Kelly has a system of speed, and in order for it to work, the whole team has to buy into it. It's not just an offensive philosophy.

The 49ers appeared to alienate their former starting quarterback, who is rehabilitating from surgery in Colorado, during the 2015 season.

"He does a great job of giving you that spark, that initial boom", Niners left guard Alex Boone said of Harbaugh last spring for the HBO "Real Sports" cameras. Players watch what happens and talk to their friends from other teams. It's what you do when you finish last in scoring (14.9 points per game) and haven't ranked among the top 10 in total yards or passing yards since 2003.

The Eagles still are trying to figure out why he made some of the moves he made during his three years in Philadelphia. While Kelly is a big name that should get the fans excited, there is probably nobody happier than quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The continuation of the Kelly experiment would have been better performed in Tennessee - the home of Chip's beloved Marcus Mariota - but the 49ers are a solid second choice. His ability to create plays with his athleticism and keep the opposing defenses on their toes are the hallmarks of what Kelly looks to do on offense.

They've spoken and written of how Kaepernick would be a ideal fit for his fast-paced, wide-open offense that includes read-option schemes and is designed for a mobile quarterback. "I would hope that he's learned that he's gotta get along better with his employees; that this is a different situation and he's gotta have everyone onboard with his style and philosophy", he said.
