Many believed Straight Outta Compton should've scored a Best Picture nomination, but it only managed to receive acknowledgement for its writing in the Best Original Screenplay category.
The #OscarsSoWhite controversy continues to plague The Academy, as more and more celebrities continue to speak out against the 2016 Oscars nominations and their lack of diversity.
"Nobody can accuse the Academy of being racist", an anonymous director said to Entertainment Weekly.
"Creed", a continuation "Rocky" films, stars African-American actor Michael B. Jordan as the lead, yet Sylvester Stallone, who returns as his Rocky character, was the only one nominated for an award, for best supporting actor. "I'm just honored to be a part of Travis' career, he's extremely talented, a visionary, I think he's changing the way people make music and listen to music". An all-white ballot is the symptom; low minority hiring is the disease.
"We don't do movies for the industry". "We got accolades from all levels, from our core fans to our curious fans, from people who didn't even think they wanted to see that movie".
That's one reason why the success of Straight Outta Compton was such a landmark moment in modern cinema history. A new report from Entertainment Weekly reveals that the Academy's Board of Governors are set to meet on Tuesday, where the diversity issue will be addressed.
Cate Blanchett for her role in Carol, Brie Larson in Room, Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years and Saoirse Ronan for her role in Brooklyn were all nominated for the Best Actress categories. "We need to do more, and better and more quickly", Boone Isaacs said. In the weeks leading up to the nominations announcement, the film received nods from both the Producers Guild and Screen Actors Guild. Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, came to his defense by starting a boycott, which really got the conversation in motion, even though it was bubbling with the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag on Twitter.
The Academy is made up of 6,000 movie professionals but its makeup is quite homogenous at 94 percent white and 77 percent male, according to an LA Times study. "They don't tell you that the person who invented the X-ray microscope was a Latino man or that the man who pioneered open-heart surgery was a black man", he said.
Instead of watching last year's award show, Reign live-tweeted comedy flick "Coming to America" starring comedian Eddie Murphy - a choice that she said was made with precision.
We wonder if he still stands by that sentiment now.
