Six-time champion Serena Williams has taken the first set 6-0 in her Australian Open singles semifinal against Agnieszka Radwanska.
Looking to tie Steffi Graf's record of 22 Grand Slam titles, Williams is also after a seventh Australian Open title, her first coming back in 2003 to complete her first Serena Slam.
The American, however, can join Graf on 22 grand slam titles, the most in the Open era, if she beats Angelique Kerber, who considers her fellow German Graf as her idol, in Saturday's final.
"I was not playing so good a year ago in the big tournaments", she said. "So I don't think anyone can really play on that kind of level at all".
The brilliant run of Johanna Konta was finally ended by Angelique Kerber in their semi-final, who in-turn made it to her first Major final.
Williams, however, broke again in the ninth game and then served out with three aces to seal a match in which she belted 42 winners to Radwanska's four. She fended off the danger of Camila Giorgi in the opening round with a straight set 6-4, 7-5 victory, followed by consecutive clinical performances against Su-Wei Hsieh 6-1, 6-2, Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-1, Margarita Gasparyan 6-2, 6-1 and Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-1.
While her record against Williams is not yet on the scale of Sharapova, it is still dismal.
On Thursday, she will be fighting Agnieszka Radwanska, the No. 4 seed from Poland. Radwanska is in great form, dominating No. 10 Carla Suarez Navarro in their quarterfinals match 6-1, 6-3.
"She started unbelievable, with such a power and speed", Radwanska said. The last German to reach the final four at Melbourne Park was Anke Huber in 1998.
The Russian described Williams as explosive while the top seed called her opponent an "incredibly intense focused player".
Radwanska stole a march in the second set, and managed successfully to break Williams in the second set, and leading her 4-3 at one point, looked as though she could give Williams somewhat of a challenge, even possibly take it to a deciding set.
"I started playing aggressive again in the second set and it worked out". "I still have to win two matches against potentially two extremely tough opponents".
The lefthander sealed the set with a simple net volley after another long rally and broke Konta to open the second, firing down her first ace to save a break point in the following game.
Williams hasn't played a left-hander so far this tournament and said that, combined with Kerber's win over two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals, were making her wary.
Asked to explain just why she has been so dominant against the five-time major victor, Williams struggled to pinpoint an exact reason.
"Now I just feel so good".
Playing under a closed roof inside Rod Laver Arena as rain fell outside, Williams was pouring winners onto the court, hitting four in the first game alone to break Radwanska out of the gates.
"Mentally I needed that break after the U.S. Open", Williams said on court after the win.
She is not going to bad mouth Radwanska either. I'm going to go to Moscow, be part of the team.
