Michigan Governor Snyder seeking additional Medicaid expansion for Flint children

Corroded lead pipes which have been contaminating the tap water of Flint, Michigan must be replaced, says a lawsuit filed Wednesday, as the USA state's embattled governor tried to contain the scandal. We can not endure this man's mismanagement another three years.

Michigan's Republican attorney general has named a former prosecutor to spearhead an investigation into the process that left Flint's drinking water tainted with lead.

"I am not confident that he can serve in the best interest of the Flint citizens", Garrett said of the attorney general.

In the meantime, Flint hired a Virginia Tech professor who helped expose the lead problem despite initial skepticism from state regulators to now oversee water testing.

The lawsuit asks a federal judge to order the defendants replace all lead pipes in Flint at no cost to the users of the lines and to ensure defendants do not commit any more actions against the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Flint, Michigan, temporarily switched its water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River in April 2014 to cut costs.

Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof said Tuesday that "duplicating efforts is not very helpful". As a result, lead leached from pipes, joints and fixtures, contaminating the drinking water for an unknown number of Flint households. Snyder said at the news conference that officials are trying to figure out where those pipes are so that action can be taken.

NAACP national CEO Cornell Brooks told a crowd on Tuesday in Flint that minorities may have been disproportionately affected by the contamination in Flint's water, calling for the creation of a victims' fund. After his speech, Brooks met with Gov. Rick Snyder along with Flint Mayor Karen Weaver to express his concerns.

Flood mostly declined to discuss which laws may have been broken, except to note there are prohibitions against misconduct by public officials.

The water apparently became contaminated in 2014 when the financially strapped city switched from Detroit water to the Flint river. That caused lead to leech into the water for a year and a half and contributed to the spike in child lead exposure before state and officials fully acknowledged the problem in early October.

The complaint was filed by Concerned Pastors for Social Action, the Michigan American Civil Liberties Union, the Natural Resources Defense Council and local resident Melissa Mays.

The steps announced Wednesday appear intended in part to help Snyder, the state and other officials regain the trust of the city's 100,000 residents, who are still unable to drink from their taps.

Snyder on Wednesday appointed Edwards to the Flint Water Interagency Coordinating Committee, which will include Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the Hurley Medical Center pediatrician who first found elevated lead levels in the blood of children. "A lot of people are lacking transportation or they don't have citizenship or they don't have IDs that don't matter at this point in time they need water so we want to make sure that anybody who is in need of water get that water".

It's too soon to know exactly how many children were harmed by lead-poisoned water in Flint, Michigan, the state's governor says.

The suit seeks injunctive and declaratory relief, rather than damages.
