Wow, people really want Rifts.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey warned us yesterday that this might happen-the Rift won't sell out, but "later orders will just have a later ship date". The headsets will cost a whopping $600, which is quite a bit more than Oculus VR's initial promises (originally they said Oculus Rift would be in the $300-400 range).
Of course, bear in mind that you will still need decent PC in order to use the Oculus Rift, with minimum hardware specifications including an Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics card, Intel's Core i5-4590 CPU, 8GB of RAM, three USB 3.0 ports, and HDMI 1.3 compatible output. It also includes Oculus Remote, a new input device for navigating VR experiences and browsing content in the Oculus store.
The general pre-order for the Rift will come with a carrying case and a copy of the games Lucky's Tale and EVE: Valkyrie.
Speaking in a Reddit AMA, Rift creator Palmer Luckey suggested that the lifespan of the Oculus Rift will be "Somewhere between a console and a mobile phone, much closer to a mobile phone".
Oculus also had a thank you gift for its early Kickstarter backers on Wednesday: a free Rift headset. "The biggest portion of their cost is the PC, not the Rift itself".
"Over 20 Oculus Studios titles, many more 3rd party titles". "More than 100 virtual reality games and other experiences are coming this year", Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on the social networking site.
