Governor Apology For Flint Water 'Catastrophe'

In his State of the State address on Tuesday night, Snyder said he was asking state lawmakers for $28 million to help residents reeling after Flint's drinking water became contaminated with dangerously high levels of lead.

- The release Wednesday of his emails involving Flint's water emergency. Children are showing elevated lead levels that could lead to all sorts of neurological and developmental health risks.

Synder also repeated his request for $28 million from the state legislature for more water, filters and testing kits and. He says some of the mains are over 100 years old in some communities and both need to be addressed at the same time, because the mains often run under roads.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican, has apologized for the state's handling of the crisis amid growing calls in the last week for him to resign. According to the U.S. Census, more than 40 percent of its residents live below the poverty line, more than double the percentage statewide.

The crowd chanted "Clean water!" and "Snyder must go!" near the Michigan Capitol Building.

"This is the time for us to make a bigger statement than we have made in a long time", said Rev. Jackson, highlighting the racial injustice in the mostly-Black city of Flint. "I give you my commitment that MI will not let you down again". "Government failed you - federal, state and local leaders - by breaking the trust you place in us".

"You deserve the know the truth, and I have a responsibility to tell the truth - the truth about what we've done and the truth about what we'll do to overcome this challenge".

On Saturday, Obama declared a federal emergency over the Flint water crisis but denied an additional request for a major disaster declaration sought by Snyder. "And that's why I'm working hard to do everything I can to fix the damage and then actually work to strengthen Flint and the citizens", Snyder told the National Journal.

"It's good to see his personal emails, but other members of the administration that are not under the Freedom of Information Act, I want to see their emails as well - chief of staff, deputy chiefs of staff, and others that are within the department", he said.

Corrosive water in the River Flint caused more lead to leach from Flint pipes than Detroit water did.

The crisis began when Flint, about an hour's drive from Detroit, switched its water supply from Detroit's system to the Flint River in 2014 to save money while under state financial management.

"If we're serious about making sure that we avoid this problem from arising in the future, that we avoid these kinds of catastrophes in the future, we've got to make sure that government is accountable and transparent", Greimel said.

Also Tuesday, Snyder highlighted successes in Detroit post-bankruptcy but warned legislators that the Detroit Public Schools could begin running out of money in the spring if more than $515 million in operating debt is not wiped away with a state bailout.
