All of those diagnosed with Zika in the USA were reportedly infected in countries overseas where Zika began circulating, health officials said.
The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes.
The CDC has named 14 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, Mexico and Haiti and are advising pregnant women to avoid travel there.
Yesterday, the Brazilian city of Piracicaba said it would expand the use of genetically modified mosquitoes to fight Aedes aegypti, the species that spreads dengue and chikungunya as well as the Zika virus.
While zika does not spread from person to person, mosquitoes could feed on returning travelers carrying the disease before transmitting it to others.
Health officials say the virus is quickly spreading through South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The Ministry of Health said the number suspected cases of microcephaly, a neurological disorder in which infants are born with smaller craniums and brains, increased to 3,893 by January 16 from 3,530 cases 10 days earlier.
Microcephaly is abnormal smallness of the head, a congenital condition associated with incomplete brain development.
In reporting the laboratory confirmation from the CDC, the Hawaii health department said the child's mother probably had a Zika infection while living in Brazil during the spring.
Dr. Sarah Park, the Hawaii state epidemiologist, said Tuesday the mother no longer had the virus when she arrived in Hawaii and the baby no longer had it at the time of birth.
Zika virus is not transmitted person-to-person. The people were also advised to clean roof gutters and eaves to prevent any water from settling and becoming a breeding area for mosquitoes. It produces symptoms that resemble flu, but concern for the virus started past year, when the infection is linked to microcephaly in several babies in Brazil.
There's no vaccine nor antiviral treatment for the virus.
The type of mosquitoes that can carry the virus are found in the southwestern US. It's spread to people through mosquito bites.
"The same kinds of mosquitoes that transmit this virus are found in Louisiana, in southern parts of the United States and so there may be infections that can happen in our country as well", said Dr. Karpovs. "When microcephaly is severe, babies can have other symptoms such as seizures, vision problems and developmental disabilities", she explained.
