Eagles to hire former Calvary boss Doug Pederson as HC

Ranking The Eagles Head Coach Options

Why Eagles have nothing to lose by interviewing Tom Coughlin

Who?Pederson, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has accepted an offer to become Philadelphia’s coach, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday night.

One report indicated that Coughlin and the Eagles could not agree on the makeup of his assistant coaching staff. The Eagles are believed to want to maintain four of the assistants who had worked under head coach Chip Kelly until Kelly was sacked on December 29.

"He's ready to do that", Reid said, "and if he has that opportunity, more power to him". The Chiefs beat Houston 30-0 to advance to the second round.

The Chiefs play the New England Patriots on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.

It's not known whether Pederson will retain Pat Shurmur, the Eagles' offensive coordinator, or running backs coach Duce Staley.

And now, just 12 years after his playing career came to an end - and just eight years removed from coaching at Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport, La. - it appears the Eagles finally see in Pederson what Reid saw years ago.

Pederson went 2-7 in nine starts in 1999 and was 3-14 in 17 career starts. While there are plenty of good players on the Eagles' roster in my opinion, Kelly set them a few years back in trading LeSean McCoy, cutting DeSean Jackson, and letting Jeremy Maclin sign with the Chiefs in his short time with them. Pederson started his first National Football League game with the Eagles and got his first National Football League assistant coaching job in Philadelphia.

The Eagles' hiring of Pederson completes an about-face of sorts, given that he is a protege of Andy Reid, whom the team fired before bringing Kelly aboard for three seasons. Reid and Pederson have received great acclaim for riting the ship after Jamal Charles went down with a torn ACL.

Meanwhile, the Giants moved toward promoting Coughlin's offensive coordinator, Ben McAdoo, to head coach.

During his news conference on Thursday, Reid said he had spoken with Lurie about his offensive coordinator before Pederson's interview with Lurie.

Other members of Reid's offensive staff have also called plays, including spread-game analyst/special projects coach Brad Childress, who called plays for Reid in Philadelphia from 2003-05 before he became head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

"I have a lot of respect for the organization and what they're doing there", Pederson said Wednesday.

The Eagles could hire one of those three and give the impression that they are simply settling or they could open up the search and conduct more interviews.

Pederson grew up in the state of Washington where he starred at Ferndale High, also the alma mater of Jake Locker, a first-round pick of the Titans in 2011 and Falcons punter Michael Koenen.
