Meghan Trainor on Teenage Insecurities: 'I — Every Day — Wore Sweatshirts and Sweatpants to Cover Up My Body'
Meghan Trainor used to be All About that Bass and body acceptance, but it sounds like the new social issue she's tackling on her second album will be the male gaze.
"I - every day - wore sweatshirts and sweatpants to cover up my body because I was so insecure", the 22-year-old said.
"[My label boss] L.A. Reid told me I didn't have a single", Meghan told EW. "I told my producer we needed a big eff-you song, an anthem about girl power that sounded like nothing on the album", she says.
"I see pictures of my face and I'm just - I'm like sad, and I'm in a sweatshirt and I'm in my room producing because I just turned off the idea of, like, 'You'll be the face (of pop music)'". "And I was in a really dark place until your song came out, '" Trainor says. But now, the Grammy-winning Best New Artist is gearing up for her sophomore album, and its lead single "No" looks to redeem all that.
"We did like six more records after this", Trainor said.
Trainor recently tweeted lyrics from the new tune echoing her own confidence: "I'm feelin untouchable...untouchable", she wrote. He was like, 'I'm not asking for that, I promise, but I know you as a songwriter can do better and I know if I push you, you will do better.' Trainor left the meeting angry, she said, but she took that energy and unleashed it on "No". "But let me stop you there before you speak". I've never had that feeling in my entire life of when you're too happy.
Trainor released Title in January 2015 following the huge success of her Number One hit "All About That Bass" in 2014. It was this session that brought about "No", her new single. Now she's proud to be a role model for them. I was so uncomfortable, and now I love myself. I felt like why would you fix something that's not broken?
