House Hearing Probes The Mystery Of High Drug Prices That 'Nobody Pays'

US-POLITICS-PHARMACEUTICAL-SHKRELI

Apparently Martin Shkreli has a very limited vocabulary

Shkreli posted the tweet Thursday, after a U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing where lawmakers attempted to get him to answer questions about a decision by his former company to dramatically raise the price of a life-saving anti-infective, Daraprim.

Shkreli, who pleaded not guilty after his arrest in December in NY, has been out on $5 million bail.

He had been asked by Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz what he would say to a pregnant, low-income woman possibly with AIDS who needed the drug Shkreli's company made.

"On the advice of counsel I invoke my Fifth amendment privilege against self-incrimination and respectfully decline to answer your question", he told the committee before questioning.

Maryland Representative U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Democrat, grew visibly annoyed by Shkreli's grinning silence.

Last year, Shkreli's company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, raised the cost of the drug from $13.50 a pill to $700 a pill.

Pharma CEO Martin Shkreli, the "most hated man on the internet" who raised the price of a HIV drug by 5,000%, chose to remain silent during the Congressional hearing on prescription drug prices.

Outside the hearing room, Brafman held a brief press conference, in which he said it was "extraordinarily unfair" that Shkreli had been singled out, calling him a "hero".

At any rate, here's hoping that whoever produces the Martin Shkreli biopic can convince Jack Gleeson (a.k.a., Joffrey on Game of Thrones) to play him. In January he decided the Wu-Tang Clan indeed was something to fuck with, threatening Ghostface Killah after purchasing the sole copy of the group's album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin for over $2 million.

Brafman said that Shkreli had badly wanted to answer Congress' questions but instead followed his advice to refuse testimony. "I truly believe you can become a force of tremendous good".

Shkreli was eventually dismissed from the hearing, at which point he promptly fled to the wrong black auto.

Gowdy noted how Shkreli repeatedly gave interviews to the media.

"I don't think I've ever seen the committee treated with such contempt", Mr Mica said. Afterward, he insulted the committee members on Twitter.

"We rely, we count on this medicine for our son", said Frese.

While other drug companies have seem cooperative and even repentant for their role in taking advantage of defenseless Americans, Shkreli continues to display his uber-rich ego.

Howard Schiller, interim CEO of Valeant Pharmaceuticals, which has also come under fire for its business model and drug prices, cited the company's recent price-cutting deal with Walgreens as an example of its responsiveness.
