Israel has faced almost five months of daily stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks carried out by Palestinians.
In this Friday, Oct. 23, 2015 file photo, an Israeli border police officer searches a Palestinian man at the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem's Old City ahead of Friday prayers. One of the youth showed their identification card to the officers when another youth pulled out a gun and opened fire, injuring the two female officers.
According to Israel National News, one of the victims, 19 year old Border Police Officer Hadar Cohen, has passed away after succumbing to her injuries. All three were shot dead by police after wounding two Israeli policewomen, the Israel police said.
"This is the second or third time we see guns and explosive devices being integrated into attacks in just the last two weeks", Rosenfeld said.
The ongoing wave of violence started in October, and was initially sparked around East Jerusalem, prompting Israeli authorities to boost police presence in the city, with many deployed in sensitive areas. Local media have named the three attackers as Ahmed Rajeh Zakarneh, Mohamed Ahmed Kmail and Ahmen Najeh Abu Al-Rub, though this has not been confirmed by officials. At the same time, 164 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, most while carrying out attacks but others during clashes and demonstrations.
Israel's settlement activities are "an affront to the Palestinian people", Ban said.
Palestinians say it is rooted in frustrations stemming from almost 50 years of "wrongful" Israeli occupation.
Speaking about the latest violence, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said there was evidence the assailants were seeking to carry out a major attack.
Human rights groups have repeatedly challenged Israel's claim to the land, arguing it is illegal to establish a military zone in occupied territory, Sarit Michaeli from the B'Tselem NGO told AFP.
Israeli concerns increased on Friday after Haniya, in comments at the seven men's funeral, highlighted the growth of new tunnels. In Israel, 66 soldiers and seven civilians were killed.
The Palestinians, for their part, must bring Hamas-controlled Gaza and the West Bank under a "single, democratic governing authority" and stop the construction of tunnels in Gaza used to wage attacks against Israelis.
