Snyder, speaking at a news conference in Flint, said "a lot of work is being done to even understand where the lead services lines fully are...."

The committee is the latest of a number of task forces and investigations into the causes of the pollution and how to make things right for Flint.

Virginia Tech researchers found the water was highly corrosive.

But some groups aren't waiting for the findings of a committee.

Replacing the damaged pipes and making the drinking water safe again will be time-consuming and expensive, and cost estimates vary wildly.

Critics say that's one reason it took so long for MI officials to wake up to the severity of the public health crisis after Flint switched public water sources, temporarily pumping water from the Flint River while a new pipeline to source water from Lake Huron was being completed.

In this photo taken Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, National Guardsmen carry water to a resident’s auto in Flint, Mich. Residents across the city have been forced to rely on bottled water after leached pipes brought lead and other risky substances into homes.

The governor just requested more federal Medicaid assistance to help people 21 years and younger with the potential effects of being exposed to lead.

According to the complaint, Khouri oversees and manages the city's operations while it remains under state control, the advisory board must approve city contracts and budget amendments including those related to operations of the water system and Henderson and the city are operators of the water system under federal law.

Still, officials could not give a timeline on when people would be able to turn on their taps.

"We need to remove all the lead", said University of Michigan Professor Martin Kaufman, who is helping the city create a database of the 15,000 to 20,000 homes that have the unsafe pipes.

The plaintiffs are the National Resources Defense Council, American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, Concerned Pastors for Social Action and resident Melissa Mays.

Snyder has blamed the crisis on incompetent bureaucrats, specifically citing "a handful of quote-unquote experts that were career civil servant people that made bad decisions".

In an emergency administrative order, the Environmental Protection Agency slammed the city of Flint, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the state of Michigan, saying they are all responsible for the lead contamination in the city's water.

Notorious liberal movie-maker Michael Moore exploited the water problems experienced by the city of Flint, MI, to attack a Republican governor for "a racial crime".

Last week, Michigan's governor apologize for the crisis and released his emails about the situation. To do so, the companies will send 176 truckloads of bottled water - up to 6.5 million bottles - to Flint.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette on Monday named a special prosecutor and investigator to look into possible crimes in Flint's water crisis. The investigation could focus on whether environmental laws were broken or if there was official misconduct in the process that left Flint's drinking water contaminated.
