Stanford Study T-Mobile’s Binge On Is ‘Likely Illegal’ The VergeT-Mobile CEO John Legere Mobile
- Another major video service, not yet included in the Binge On list of free services, is seeing customers watch 33 percent more hours than before, thanks to Binge On optimization providing up to three times more video from their data plan.
While T-Mobile and Legere continue to amass critics of the service - including the Electric Frontier Foundation - it looks like Binge On might be here to stay (for T-Mobile customers, at least).
T-Mobile on Thursday confirmed it has added more video streaming services to its Binge On.
"[Binge On] has literally changed the way millions of people are watching video-they're watching more", CEO John Legere said in a statement. The carrier is also taking this opportunity to tell us again how much more video people are watching with Binge On.
In addition to announcing the service expansions, T-Mobile also released data on how the service had affected customer's data consumption and it's pretty substantial. For those who aren't familiar, the Un-carrier's Binge On option allows customers with cellular plans including 3 GB of high speed data or more the opportunity to stream video from a number of services without touching their bandwidth allotment. As some of you may already know, it's possible to use the short code of #BOF# and #BON# to turn it off and on, respectively. Like with the rest of the partnered Binge On video services, you can now watch video from all four of those services without the streams counting against your data bucket. The app update is set to begin rolling out today to "a small group of Android customers, expanding to more over the next several week", with Apple iOS users set to receive the update sometime next month. "We don't make our customers jump through hoops to get our Un-carrier moves, and we won't ever stop amping them up and making them even better". While the video is downgraded, it's always at least 480p (DVD) quality. Thankfully, Binge On is now a lot easier to disable. 3x claim applies only to video streaming data.
