A couple hours before he was sacked as the Cleveland Browns' head coach, Mike Pettine said wasn't sure where quarterback Johnny Manziel was this weekend in the wake of USA TODAY Sports' report late Saturday night that the former Heisman Trophy victor was gambling in Las Vegas.
At least one report says Manziel's days in Cleveland are numbered and Haslam was asked specifically about this possibility on Sunday.
However, injuries and other factors lead to Johnny Manziel returning as the starting quarterback, but after suffering a concussion was forced to sit out again.
Manziel, 23, spent more than 10 weeks in an inpatient rehabilitation facility specializing in alcohol and drug addiction treatment this past offseason, and Pettine revealed last week members of the organization want him to address his off-field issues again this offseason. And if Manziel had his way, he would be a Dallas Cowboy.
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine watches Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, during the first half of an NFL football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Cleveland.
Sam Brenner points out the irony in that Mike Pettine's name pops up the day after he was sacked by the Browns, just two seasons after he was named coach of the franchise. "I think we saw his ability to play, and if they give him another chance and he's ready to work, I think [the players are] ready to keep giving him a chance".
Whether or not Manziel will be with the Browns next season or the one after that will be decided by the team's new general manager and its executive vice president Sashi Brown, said Haslam. He appeared in nine games this season, throwing for seven touchdowns while turning the ball over a total of 11 times (five interceptions, six fumbles) and finishing with a quarterback rating of 79.4. During a Sunday evening press conference, Haslam said that Manziel "was not [present at the team's facility in Berea, Ohio]" on Sunday morning. They said they don't know him very well, but are hoping for the best.
Haslam said the team will immediately begin a search for its eighth full-time coach of the expansion era. Or do you think that Johnny's time is up? He started in two of the three team wins this season, emerging victorious over Tennessee and San Francisco.
Manziel posted a photon on Instagram that showed him with his dog at home, once the word of his presence in Vegas spread on social media; the hashtag read #SaturdayNights.
