USA investigators will examine actor Sean Penn's interactions with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, two US government sources said yesterday, but it is unclear if prosecutors would try to force the actor to turn over information about his interview with the recaptured drug kingpin.
But the Sinaloa cartel leader could be extradited to the United States, where he faces seven drug-related indictments in various jurisdictions.
That's the start of the process, though the head of extradition for the Mexican attorney general's office told local media that it will probably take at least a year to extradite Guzman.
The article revealed that the actor traveled to Mexico to interview the drug lord in October, while Guzman was on the run from Mexican authorities after escaping prison.
CBS This Morning co-anchor Charlie Rose said today that he will interview actor Sean Penn, but not for another movie.
Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo lashed out on Wednesday against reports about her relationship with drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, saying they "aren't truthful". He would have the right to appeal, and Guzman's attorneys have filed documents to fight extradition. Another photograph seemingly shows Penn and del Castillo meeting with some men outside the Villa Ganz hotel in Guadalajara. Authorities said food had been ordered for 13 people on the eve of the raid.
From there, dozens more questions emerge: Who is del Castillo, and why did she have a hand in all of this?
In the interview with Penn published by Rolling Stone, Guzman said he felt neither remorse nor responsibility for smuggling billions of dollars worth of drugs into the United States. Nor does he consider himself a violent man despite countless murders blamed on him, he told Penn.
Mexico has issued arrest warrants for more than 20 former officials, guards and police officers for their alleged participation in Guzman's escape previous year.
He spent hours below ground as his henchmen sought to lure pursuing Marines toward the roof of the house. Another was killed inside the house, officials said.
Authorities raided his hideout in Durango state a few days after the meeting but Guzman grabbed his cook's daughter and used her "as a human shield", holding her in front of him as a helicopter hovered overhead, prompting soldiers to hold fire, a Mexican official said.
In a prison break worthy of Hollywood, Guzman's accomplices apparently obtained the plans to Altiplano and during his 17 months inside built a tunnel fitted with a tiny rail system mounted with a motor bike that he then rode to freedom.
It took Marines 90 minutes to find the tunnel entrance, giving Guzman a crucial headstart. Guides showed the AP how a lever hidden behind a ceiling light operated a mechanism that opened a door behind the mirror.
Below, there was a submarine-like metal hatch connecting the partially flooded tunnel to the Los Mochis drains.
"My holidays are over", Guzman said when he was finally caught, Televisa reported.
Copies of TV episodes of La Reina de Sur, del Castillo's most famous role, portraying a fictional trafficker, were found in the safehouse Guzman was hiding in prior to his capture.
Bullet holes peppered the stair wall of the house and there was blood spattered in several rooms.
