Eagles hire Pederson as new coach

Within the hour, Chip Kelly, fired by the Eagles three years into a five-year contract, became head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Kelly, abrasive and dismissive, must have scarred the Eagles family something fierce.

Reid described his arrival in Kansas City, along with much of his staff from the Eagles, as a different situation.

More than any of the four teammates who share his connection to Pederson, Kelce has likely paid closest attention to the post-Eagles career of the young coach.

Not once did Lurie refer to Pederson as a "great football mind" or a "superb offensive intellect".

The Chiefs have scored 400 points or more in a season only eight times dating all the way back to the days of the Dallas Texans (1960), and two of those seasons have been with Pederson as offensive coordinator. Lurie just kept calling Pederson a really nice guy. "We knew we were going to score". He has not held the title of offensive coordinator since 2004 with the Cleveland Browns, when he also was interim head coach by the end of the season, replacing Butch Davis. That get-together was Sunday in Kansas City. He started his National Football League career with the Miami Dolphins, playing for coach Don Shula from 1993 to 1995, including winning Shula's record 325th career victory after an injury sidelined Scott Mitchell.

But it was clear that Pederson was the choice, and that he would be hired as soon as Kansas City lost in the playoffs.

Pederson played quarterback for the Eagles in 1999.

Lets' start at Northeast Louisiana, where Pederson helped win the Division I-AA championship in 1987. Somebody needs to direct him on the cart and horse thing.

Over the summer, BJ Kissel of chiefs.com wrote a profile on Pederson, and it includes the story of when Reid first noticed the potential in his former student.

But now that Lurie's landed on Doug Pederson as head coach, he appears to be rethinking that system.

Pierre-Paul had delayed the surgery in order to play this season. The owner later added that the team would be beginning another search process to find a head of personnel.

Pederson was asked point-blank on Tuesday if that bothered him.

"Looking at the Philadelphia Eagles, what intrigued me..." A coach expecting to take a few years would be more likely to plan on drafting a quarterback and building around him. But such a possibility would ruin that feel-good vibe.
