Customers spent more than $20 billion (£13.7 billion) in Apple's App Store last year and were particularly active in the two weeks spanning Christmas and New Year, breaking traffic and sales records. In the last two weeks of December and early January, customers of the company's App Store spent roughly $1.1 billion on apps and in-app purchases. "We can't wait for what's to come in 2016", he stated. The App Store may have a reputation for being bloated with apps but it has been a major influence in how the apps economy has grown, especially when considering that apps are now ubiquitous in nearly every aspect of daily life.
Apple stock, though, was down 1.2% in early trading in the stock market today, below 102 and at a more than four-month low.
The huge sales could be welcome news to investors who have slightly cooled on Apple's stock in the past few days after reports that orders to its Chinese suppliers have eased, leading to concerns of an iPhone sales slowdown in the year ahead.
All this looks very hunky-dory to a normal user, but the Apple insiders know that even beneath this successful façade, there lies a gradual decline in growth rates.
Still, those payouts mean the world's biggest company feels comfortable enough to make the claim that it's responsible for creating and supporting 1.9-million jobs in the US.
To date, almost $40 billion has been earned by developers on the App Store since its launch in 2008.
On the Apple TV side, games such as Rayman Adventures and Beat Sports lead the way, while the Apple Watch attracts fitness and transit apps such as Nike+ Running and Citymapper, respectively. In addition, it wasn't Christmas Day that was Apple's biggest, but rather New Year's Day (Jan 1) which became the biggest day in App Store history. Apple also pointed out that the App Store is now a potent job creator. Well, Apple's senior vice president revealed that the App Store sales were actually double in 2015, compared to 2013. The huge app hub has always been a selling point for Apple products, giving the company an ever-growing area of revenue. Further, Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Trivia Crack, Heads Up!, Facebook Messenger and WeChat were among the most downloaded apps and games.
