Thomas, in case you forgot, or didn't know, was an Olympic medalist who went on to become an orthopedic surgeon, but then, her life took a turn for the worse. Desperate to make her dreams reality, Thomas launched a campaign online to raise funds. After becoming the first African American woman to win a medal at the Winter games with her bronze in 1988, she has been forced to file for bankruptcy after falling more than $600,000 in debt.

At nine she won her first competition and her career was born.

After the Olympics, Debi completed a degree in engineering at Stanford University and went on to become a physician, graduating from medical school at Northwestern University, noted People.

"They are totally embarrassed for sure", she said.

Debi Thomas, a former Olympic skater and doctor, is now living in poverty in a trailer park in the Appalachian Mountains. Divorce, unemployment and bankruptcy left her living in a bug-infested trailer with her fiancé and his two young sons.

"(I feel) frustrated", the once-trailblazing Thomas says before breaking down in tears in the emotional episode that aired Saturday on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

In a video on the page, Thomas said she was trying to restore "financial stability after severe sudden financial losses over the past couple of years associated with a combination of financially crippling life challenges".

"You got to a point where you couldn't afford to do anything other than live in a trailer".

"You can't help anybody until you can help you", Iyanla says.

"Suddenly, you're like, 'I can't even pay my phone bill, I can't even pay this, '" Thomas, 48, told Good Morning America on Monday, November 9, of her current financial status.

"Not sad, not angry, not ashamed?" asked Vanzant. Iyanla continues. "Frustration is what you feel?"

Thomas shakes her head, and Iyanla gets ready to share the harsh truth she believes Thomas needs to hear.
